Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing Ayurvedic therapy that involves the continuous pouring of warm medicated oil, buttermilk, or herbal decoctions over the forehead. This therapy is renowned for its calming effects on the mind and body.
Benefits
Benefits: Shirodhara is highly effective in reducing stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue. It promotes better sleep, enhances mental clarity, and helps manage conditions such as migraines, insomnia, and hypertension. The gentle flow of liquid stimulates the pineal gland, inducing deep relaxation and tranquility.
Procedure: The treatment begins with a gentle head and neck massage to relax the muscles. The patient then sleeps comfortably with their head positioned under the Shirodhara vessel. Warm medicated oil is poured in a steady stream onto the forehead, particularly on the area between the eyebrows known as the “third eye.” The liquid flows continuously for about 30 to 45 minutes, allowing the patient to enter a state of deep relaxation. After the therapy, the oil is gently massaged into the scalp and allowed to absorb.
Duration: A typical Shirodhara session lasts about 45 to 60 minutes. For optimal results, a series of sessions may be recommended over a period of 7 to 14 days.
Precautions: Shirodhara should be administered by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner to ensure the correct temperature and flow of the liquid. It is generally not recommended for individuals with severe sinus congestion, recent head injuries, or certain neurological conditions.
